Sri Lanka – The Island of Ancient Kingdoms, Sacred Relics & Timeless Landscapes

Beyond Sites — Into Stories | Sacred Cities | Ancient Kingdoms | Leopards & Elephants | Tea Highlands | Tropical Shores

“BETTER TO SEE SOMETHING ONCE THAN HEAR ABOUT IT A THOUSAND TIMES.”

To get you started, based on the ideas and inputs you shared with me, I have prepared the following Initial Travel Plan for Sri Lanka.

This journey is designed to take you deep into the island’s 2,500-year-old civilization, where ancient kings, Buddhist philosophy, colonial influences, and natural wonders blend seamlessly.

Tour Hightlights:

  • Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock, a 5th-century fortress rising dramatically above the jungle.
  • Spot wild elephants on a dawn jeep safari at Habarana National Park.
  • Ride the legendary hill country train through misty tea estates to Ella.
  • Visit the Sacred Tooth Temple in Kandy, revered by Buddhists for 2,000 years.
  • Stop at Ravana, Diyaluma, and Ellewala waterfalls on the drive to the coast.
  • Sail from Mirissa Harbour at sunrise to spot blue whales in the ocean.
  • Wander the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort, a 17th-century Dutch colonial town on the coast.

Tour Plan

Day 1 | Arrival – Colombo → Negombo

A warm greeting awaits you as our driver, holding a JANU PRIVATE TOURS sign board, welcomes you at the arrivals hall and a short drive to the coastal town of Negombo. Stroll along the old Dutch canal, unwind at the beach, and enjoy a relaxed seafood dinner as the sun dips into the ocean

Day 2 | Negombo → Sigiriya

Head into Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle with a stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple — five sacred caves carved with over 150 Buddha statues and beautifully preserved ancient murals dating back to the 1st century BCE.

Day 3 | Sigiriya – The Lion Rock Kingdom

Rise early to climb the legendary Lion Rock before the heat builds — a 5th-century palace-fortress with frescoes, royal gardens, and sweeping jungle views from the summit. End the day with a hands-on Sri Lankan cooking class led by local chefs.

Day 4 | Sigiriya → Kandy

Start with a morning jeep safari at Habarana to witness one of Asia’s largest wild elephant gatherings. En route to Kandy, stop at a Matale spice garden, then spend the evening at the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Day 5 | Kandy → Ella – Into the Tea Highlands

Wind through mountain roads to Nanu Oya, then board what many call the world’s most scenic train ride — three hours through misty tea estates, jungle, and rolling highlands all the way into Ella.

Day 6 | Ella – Mountains, Bridges & Tea Valleys

Catch the sunrise from Little Adam’s Peak on a gentle 30-minute hike as the hills emerge from morning mist. Later, visit the colonial-era Nine Arch Bridge framed by jungle and tea fields, then roam Ella’s charming cafés at your own pace.

Day 7 | Ella → Mirissa – Waterfalls to the Coast

Descend from the highlands toward the southern coast, pausing at Ravana Falls and the towering Diyaluma Falls along the way. Arrive in Mirissa just in time for a golden tropical sunset by the ocean.

Day 8 | Mirissa – Tropical Beach Escape

A full day on Sri Lanka’s southern shore — swim at Mirissa Beach, hike up to Parrot Rock for coastal views, try surfing at nearby Weligama, and close the evening at the iconic Coconut Tree Hill viewpoint.

Day 9 | Ocean Encounters – Whale Watching

Set out at 6 AM from Mirissa Harbour into the deep blue Indian Ocean. This stretch of water is one of the best places on earth to spot blue whales — the largest animals ever to exist — alongside sperm whales and playful spinner dolphins.

Day 10 | Mirissa → Negombo – Coastal Heritage

Drive north along the scenic coast with a stop inside the historic walls of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with Dutch-era architecture, boutique shops, and ocean views. Round off the journey with a farewell seafood dinner on the beach.

Day 11 | Departure – Sri Lanka

FAREWELL – SRI LANKA
A quiet final morning with breakfast by the coast before your driver transfers you to Bandaranaike International Airport — just 20 minutes away — for your onward journey home.
